From the Publisher's Desk: Weekly Star is coming to your homes for 2 weeks

Surprise! Bet you weren't expecting me this week, but I wanted to tell you about a bonus for home subscribers to The Daily Star for the next two Fridays.

All home subscribers will receive a complimentary copy of The Weekly Star, our newest publication that I've mentioned in my columns.

We thought you might enjoy the unique columnists and features it has to offer. One of my favorites is the center spread of area events, including community-submitted photographs.

I encourage you to check it out and continue to send us your best shots of family, neighbors and community events that capture the heart and pulse of this great area.

On the second Friday, we will publish the names of outlets that carry The Weekly Star so you can continue to enjoy it free of charge.

It is our pleasure to continually progress with different products and services to better suit your needs, and we always welcome your input and feedback.

I would love to hear your thoughts, so if you get a second, drop me a line.

If you are anything like me, the nostalgia of clipping a photo or a child's name from the newspaper is special.

I know I have already started one for my family. I remember my mom doing the same, and the keepsake is memorable and irreplaceable.

Back in high school, some action shots of me hit The Daily Star sports pages. I certainly didn't look my best, but I remember the pictures, the honor I felt, and the razzing I took in school that same day!

Enough said. I hope you enjoy this special program, and as always, we appreciate your support and continued patronage.

  • Schreibman tops Chris Gibson on women's issues

As the time to vote draws near, we need to remember how money can run politics more than we can. Raising funds is a prominent (if not the dominant) task of getting elected. Raising issues is also crucial, but those efforts are subject to distortion and fear-mongering.

  • Republicans feelentitled to allthey can garner An entitlement is a legal benefit available from the government to individuals who are within a defined category of recipients, such as needing insurance for unemployment or health services.

  • Romney focuses on self; Obama emphasizes unity

Mitt Romney criticizes President Obama for saying a person's success is rooted in his community, and is not all his alone. Romney belittles this with his belief in individual initiative. He is better at the put-down than the push-up.

  • Romney shows little regard for common man

The Republicans in Congress have voted over and over, 33 times, redundantly and uselessly, to rescind what they call Obamacare.

  • Scouts' gay ban creates problem where none exists

The Boy Scouts of America's "emphatic reaffirmation" of its vow to exclude any and all homosexuals from its hallowed ranks is ill-considered and pathetic, especially in view of its having reviewed the matter for two years.
