It is now a new year, and time for River Valley New Holland's Top 10 Wishes for 2012. Warning: Some may find the following graphic nauseating, or hallucinatory.
No. 10: How about a revival of the Occupy Wall Street movement?
Please reference nauseating disclaimer above. Remember when liberal politicians, media pundits and local loons were lauding this bunch as being "a force to change and lead America"?
They proved to be a drug- and maggot-infested gathering of weirdos demanding new government handouts for the "lame and lazy," and, like the embarrassing uncle at Christmas, we couldn't wait for them to go home.
However, I loved watching them condemn capitalism while wearing Nike sneakers, Old Navy shirts and Wrangler jeans, at the same time drinking Starbucks coffee as they slept in tents made by Coleman. When cold weather hit, they all scampered home and warmed themselves with fossil fuels. Let's hope they come back soon to once again illustrate the insanity of left-wing America.
No. 9: We wish for honesty in the media, government and the presidential campaign.
Fat chance! Please note disclaimer on hallucinatory. It is sad, but dishonesty in reporting, governing and campaigning is the norm.
The mainstream media, most of which leans left, no longer reports the news; they direct it! Think about it. Certain politicians are coddled and never asked tough questions. Others must explain every statement and endure questions about all facets of their lives. Just look at the passes given to Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi and President Obama. Contrast the treatment given President George W. Bush, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Newt.
In regard to government, a recent email was circulated on the Internet posing the question, "What organization has X numbers of arrests, dead-beat-dads, bounced checks, felonies, DWI's …" The answer was a multiple choice: A) the NFL, B) the NBA or C) the U.S. Congress. The correct answer was C) the U.S. Congress. We laugh and accept it, but how sad.
In campaigns, how often have we heard reporters and legitimate analysts state that "He has to say that, to get elected" or "Does anyone really expect a politician to live up to his campaign promises?" Think about it. We demand more honesty from a cashier at Walmart than we do our president, congressmen or senators.
No. 8: We wish for an end to political correctness.
Has it worked? Has it brought people together? No, it has not! We have childish terms like the N-word, the B-word and the P-word. Illegal aliens are called "undocumented workers." People are no longer fat; they are "calorically challenged."
Good grief, tax increases are now "revenue enhancements." Thanks to the Obama administration, the War on Terror is now called the "Overseas Contingency Operations." What's next? Terrorists renamed "People who have not accepted Obama's apology for America"?
No. 7: Stop telling me what to eat, what to drive and how to heat and light my home!
Please, enough of these touchy-feely regulations, directed taxation and government handouts to those that play the foolish environmental game. Stop the hamfisted indoctrination and give us credit for making our own decisions and spending what's left of our own money.
No. 6: Let's end foreign aid to countries that despise and work against us.
Sure, it's but a drop in our budget bucket, but why play the patsy and send those clowns anything?
No. 5: Stop complaining about "God" being in the Pledge of Allegiance, on our currency and part of our national holidays.
The First Amendment was never intended to advocate an atheist nation.
No. 4: We wish for the continuance of the United States of America as the dominant world economy and military power by spending less, reducing the national debt and boosting employment through manufacturing and conventional energy exploration.
No. 3: Ah, fracking!
Let us hope that 2012 will be filled with much-needed gas exploration in all of New York state. Especially so, may the area around Cooperstown be filled with pipelines, well heads and "sustainable INDUSTRY" that benefit ALL her residents.
No. 2: Note graphic disclaimer above. Drum roll, please! Rid ourselves of the most inept, condescending, big-government, arrogant, bungling, vacation-addicted, unpatriotic, big-spending, telepromptered, socialist president in U.S. history.
We've had some real winners, but this guy makes Jimmy Carter look good.
No. 1: May 2012 be prosperous for all, but especially for those who rise at 4 a.m., clean their barns, milk their cows, fight the weather and breakdowns to harvest their crops, do chores again at 4 p.m. and more crop work or repairs until dark. Then they rise at 4 a.m. and start all over again.
Every year, dairy farmers work harder and smarter and in a good year may "break even." They don't complain. They don't riot or occupy. They love their wives, raise their children well and thank God each day for their blessings.

Blessed is he who is not offended by me
A few weeks ago in our column, we included an old joke about the advantages a tractor has over a woman. We received the following email: "I was offended by your jokes about a 'good woman' in the April 10, 2012 column. This type of humor lacks taste, and unnecessarily offends people. Please do not include this type of humor in your column."

President Obama provides little hope and change
With a little luck and divine providence, my President Barack Obama will be elected again. He certainly deserves another four years.

Tebow, Zimmerman are suffering the slings and arrows
After watching the news for the last few weeks, I have to wonder what the heck's going on. To any rational person, things are little skewed. To illustrate, let's follow the saga of two young men.

Entitlement in U.S. has created 'permanent poor'
In the early '80s, our family began a farm equipment dealership on Route 10, south of Stamford. I had put an ad in the paper for a mechanic and the same day the ad came out, I was at that store, and there was a classic Delaware County January blizzard.

Anti-drilling activists wasting time on inevitable
As Otis Redding once sang, "I'm just sitting on the dock of the bay, wasting time." This pretty much sums up New York state and the gas drilling issue.

Who is really to blame for global warming trend?
Last Monday evening, my wife was at a meeting about funding a World Vision well for a Kenyan village. So, not having to watch any "Law and Order" reruns, I tuned to the National Geographic Channel and they were profiling the Alaskan village of Shishmaref, located on the island of Sarichef.

GOP gets no credit for caring about the working man
During this election season that never seems to end, I've noticed that the Democratic Party is called "the party of the common man" and the Republican Party is referred to as "the party of business and industry." Is that so?

On the Right Side: 'Robin Hood' can teach us a thing or two this election
A few nights ago, we needed to make a decision. Should we watch another heart-stopping Republican presidential candidate debate or the swashbuckling movie, "Robin Hood," starring Russell Crowe?

Guns should be seen as protection, not danger
Yesterday, 85,000,000 American gun owners, with their 350,000,000 firearms, shot no one.

'Merry Christmas' should not cause controversy
A good friend of mine is a retired Jewish fellow now leading the equestrian lifestyle in the mountains of Delaware County. I asked George a couple of years ago if he'd be offended should I wish him a "Merry Christmas."

Cain scrutiny was needed on Obama's birth certificate
Imagine you live on Mars and are using an interplanetary-pulse reduction-flux-capacitor-transponder, supplied by the Obama administration's seventh stimulus package. By thus being able to receive broadcasts from Earth, you would conclude that we have the most depraved, sexually permissive society ever.

It's hard to blame companies that flee, except Ommegang
In 1932, Will Rogers said: "This country has gotten where it is in spite of politics, not by the aid of it. That we have carried as much political bunk as we have and still survived, shows we are a super nation."

Beware of group seeking to control drilling rights
Today is Election Day. Thank goodness the campaigning is over! Seems like every October and November, our roads are lined with thousands of campaign signs and slogans. There are so many that one begins to ignore them, much like "Rollback Pricing" at Walmart.

Occupy protesters do little to help their own causes
The liberal left has a new "darling." With the sweeping success of the conservative Tea Party movement in the 2010 fall elections, liberals and their media allies were grabbing at straws. Like Dorothy in the Land of Oz, they found their scarecrow, but unlike Oz, there is no wizard.

Things seem to be a little strange these days
Maybe it's global warming, sunspots or pre-fracking hysteria, but hasn't last week had more than its share of peculiar editorial columns, insane settlements, bizarre verdicts and outlandish causes?

Obama to push for oil, gas drilling fees, tax increase
A Sept. 19 Fox News article on the proposed Obama administration's fees and tax increases states: "Another proposal would charge $4 an acre on non-producing oil and gas leases on federal lands, raising $1 billion over a decade. The idea is to prod energy companies to get their leases into production or give them up and allow others to develop them."

The mindset of Mother Nature 'is senseless'
Last Tuesday evening, my wife, our son Adam and I took a drive to Prattsville, Gilboa, Middleburgh and Schoharie. We had heard about all the flood damage from Hurricane Irene, and having friends and customers in that area, we decided to visit and see if we could be of help.
