Magazine names SUNY Oneonta among top public college values

Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named SUNY Oneonta to its list of "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" for the sixth consecutive year, a media release from the college said.

The magazine website listed the State University College at Oneonta at No. 58.

The annual rankings, released Tuesday, identified four-year schools that combine outstanding education with economic value, Kiplinger's website said. The magazine selects colleges and universities based on measures of academic quality, such as admission, retention and graduation rates, and factors in costs and financial aid.

Kiplinger's is the second magazine to recognize the SUNY Oneonta for academic excellence in recent months. In August, SUNY Oneonta moved to its highest position -- No. 41 -- on U.S. News and World Report's 2012 Best Colleges list in the "Regional Universities -- North" category.

SUNY Oneonta enrolls about 6,000 undergraduates.

New contract for Community Bank CEO

Community Bank System Inc. and its subsidiary Community Bank and Mark E. Tryniski, president and chief executive officer of the company and bank, have agreed to a new employment contract.

Under the plan, which is in effect from Sunday to Dec. 31, 2014, Tryniski's base salary will be $620,000 annually, according to documents filed with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. The agreement supersedes one dated March 18, 2009.

Community Bank bought Oneonta-based Wilber Corp. and its Wilber National Bank last year.

Last month, Forbes released a listing with Community Bank System in the No. 4 spot, up from No. 7 in 2010, among America's Best and Worst Banks.

"This ranking is a direct result of our tremendous staff and the efforts they put forth every day in serving our customers, communities and shareholders," Tryniski said in a media release.

Forbes said the financial health of the publicly traded banks and thrift institutions was based on factors including return on average equity; net interest margin; and nonperforming loans as a percentage of loans.
