2 area pupils place in N.Y. agriculture art contest

Two Downsville Central  School pupils won first and third places, respectively, in the pre-kindergarten division of a statewide art competition focusing on agriculture.

Maisyn Stanton, 5, won first place in the I Love New York Agriculture art contest with her picture of a pig, complete with a snout and curly tail, a media release said, and Payton Reichert, 4, won third place with her picture of farm life.

Also, Stamford Central School student Melanie Hoyt won an honorable mention in the contest in the third-grade division. In the statewide I Love New York Agriculture contest, pupils submitted pictures of cows, chickens, pigs, apples, grapes, maple syrup and other products of New York state’s agricultural industry, a media release announcing results earlier this month said.

Of about 1,000 entries from elementary school students, 40 prize-winning paintings, posters, poems and stories were chosen in the 2012 annual New York Agriculture in the Classroom “I Love New York Agriculture” Art and Writing Contest.

The contest aims to teach students about the importance of agriculture.

Winners in each category received prizes ranging from T-shirts to savings bonds, the release said, and the winning entries will be displayed at Empire Farm Days and at the New York State Fair. Members of Sigma Alpha, Cornell University’s professional agriculture sorority, judged the entries.

Jody Reed, pre-kindergarten teacher at the Downsville school, said she was excited to hear of her students’ success and “never expected’’ to  have two winners when entering the artwork.“I was just so pleased,’’ she said.

Reed, a 1989 graduate of Downsville Central School, said she has 13 pre-kindergartners in her class. The art contest added enrichment to her curriculum, she said.

“Recently our class explored the difference between farm and zoo animals and also enjoyed a unit on growing their own bean and sunflower plants,’’ Reed said. “I am so proud of each of my students for trying their best to draw a favorite farm animal.’’

The prizes sent to the class included educational materials and seeds, which will be useful in more lessons about plants and agriculture, Reed said. New York Agriculture in the Classroom and the New York Farm Bureau Foundation for Agricultural Education have sponsored the I Love New York Agriculture Contest since 1996.

New York Agriculture in the Classroom is a partnership of Cornell University, the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, the state Education Department, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the New York Farm Bureau.
