On the Bright Side: Bassett welcomes first local baby of the year Sunday afternoon

The first baby of 2012 in this area was born at 1:37 p.m. at Bassett Medical Center on Sunday in Cooperstown to parents from Sidney.

Connor Tessora weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces at birth.

His mother, Christine Seeber, 19, said her due date was today, but on New Year's Eve, things started happening and she checked into the Bassett Birthing Center.

"I kind of thought he would be born on the due date," she said from the hospital by phone Monday night.

But she said she was glad he was a New Year's Day baby.

"Everybody was so excited," she said. "It feels pretty good, actually."

Seeber recalled the moment she first held her son, who came into the world healthy through natural childbirth.

"I just fell in love with him," Seeber said. "I love his eyes. He looks just like his father."

Seeber lives with Connor's father, Sam Tessora, in Sidney, where the elder Tessora works as a maintenance man at a senior living facility.

Tessora, 21, said he was a proud father. It is the first child for both.

"It feels great," Tessora said. "It's a new experience."

Tessora said family members and staff at Bassett were supportive throughout Connor's birth and hospital stay. His family is expecting to go home today, he said.

"I'm going to take this week off from work and spend time with them," he said.

Two other babies were born locally Sunday.

At 4:29 p.m. Sunday, Xandria Katherynn was born at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta to Rose-Ann and Keith Gavette of Margaretville, according to an official who spoke with the family Monday. Xandria weighed 10 pounds, 8 ounces.

At 11:54 p.m. Sunday, Wesley David Vail was born at the Bassett Birthing Center. He weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces, his father, David Vail of Ilion said. The baby and his mother, Samantha, are doing well, he said Monday night. Vail said Wesley was due Jan. 11 and is their first child.

"He likes to sleep," said Vail, who attended the birth. "He's great."
