COMMENTING ON STORIES:

8. Content that is harmful to children and minors in any way.
9. References to any type of sexual activity and other private matters.
10. Random and inflammatory statements that are off topic.
11. Advertising of any kind.
12. Typing in all caps.

1. Create conversation on issues of interest and concern to fellow readers and local community members.
2. Express opinions and contrarian views.
3. Stimulate debate with respectful language.

Fourth-graders honored for history projects

Local history came alive recently for a group of area elementary school students.

Forty-five Oneonta fourth-graders created projects with the theme "If This Building Could Talk" for the eighth annual Sally Mullen Local History Award project presented by the Greater Oneonta Historical Society. Winners were announced at a June 12 reception at the GOHS History Center on Main Street.

Education committee members Julia Ianello, Len Pudelka, Helen Rees, Wayne Wright and committee Chairman Mark Parmerter were judges of the 45 submitted projects.

First prize was awarded to Aivan Malanoski of Riverside Elementary School for his project on the Swart-Wilcox House. Second prize was awarded to Ava Wilber of Center Street Elementary School for her project on the Wilber Mansion. (Her great-great-great uncle was George I. Wilber, who built the mansion on Ford Avenue.) Third prize was awarded to Kate Ackley of Center Street, for her project on the Swart-Wilcox House.

Honorable mentions for overall projects were awarded to Teddy McGraw of Center Street for the Oneonta Roundhouse and Lucas Wilder of Riverside for the Oneonta Theatre. Honorable mentions for outstanding displays went to Mary Brantley of Center Street for the Oneonta YMCA, Avery Burnsworth of Center Street for the First United Methodist Church, Matt Frederick of Riverside for the Oneonta Roundhouse, Jacob Ghiorse of Riverside for the Oneonta Theatre, Taylor Harkenreader of Riverside for the Oneonta Armory and Mahala Johnson of Center Street for the D&H Railroad Depot.

Parmerter told the crowd of 75 students, families and friends that the program was named after the late Sally Mullen because of her leadership of GOHS, her love for local history and her dedication to children as librarian at Center Street Elementary School.

The three prize-winning projects are on display in the window of the History Center at 183 Main St.
