A local charity group will be trying something a little different for a major fundraiser. Habitat for Humanity of Otsego County is holding the Brewery to Brewery 5-Kilometer Fun Run/Walk on Sunday. Unlike many 5K races, this one will not be a loop course.
The starting line will at the Cooperstown Brewing Company, and the finish line will be at Brewery Ommegang. The breweries are among the event sponsors.
Vans will be available to shuttle walkers and runners from Ommegang and back to the Cooperstown Brewing Company, according to Steve Walsh, a member of the Habitat board.
Habitat for Humanity is in its 23rd year of building homes in Otsego County and typically does one or two homes a year.
“We provide homes, but it isn’t free,” Walsh said. Instead, families must contribute 500 hours of sweat equity, and they also have mortgages, which cover the materials costs for the building of the home, he said.
Habitat had held a golf tournament for four years in a row as a major fundraiser. But the group had never been able to generate more than $4,500, and the golf tournament was a lot of work to coordinate, he said.
“It’s much easier to organize a run,” Walsh said. This event is also intended to be lighthearted and family oriented, Walsh said.
“We have the words ‘fun run’ in there,” Walsh said.
Pre-registered runners and walkers will receive a pint glass from Brewery Ommegang and a Fun Run T-shirt featuring the several sponsors of the event, according to Walsh. There will also be awards for top runners, raffle prizes and a DJ spinning music.
Tours of the two breweries will also be available.
Registration for the run/ walk will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cooperstown Brewing Company, which is at 110 River St. in the village of Milford.
Advance registration can be done by visiting www.habitatotsego. org. Day-of registration is $25, while advance registration is $20.
Participants may also obtain pledges from family members and friends, and these can result in a reduced registration fee, according to organizers.

Casey at the Bat
Editor's note: Today marks the 125th anniversary of the first appearance of Ernest Lawrence Thayer's "Casey at the Bat" in the San Francisco Examiner. It may well be the most popular American poem ever written, and it is certainly appropriate that in the Cooperstown area it be given its proper recognition. So, we are printing it in its entirety here. We urge parents to read it aloud to their children, but no one does a better rendition of "Casey" than Tim Wiles, director of research at the Baseball Hall of Fame. We asked Tim to tell us how he has come to be virtually synonymous with the poem, and he was kind enough to provide the following account.
