Local artists honored with awards

Three local artists were among those honored with awards at The Arc Otsego’s eighth annual “Voice!” juried art exhibition.

According to a media release, the exhibition celebrates the creative voices of artists with intellectual and other developmental disabilities from across New York state.

“Voice! 8” featured 79 works of art created by more than 70 artists representing 19 counties throughout the state. Twelve awards, totaling $1,400 in prize money, were announced at the exhibit’s opening reception Aug. 17 at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery at the State University College at Oneonta.

Local winners included:

Spirit Award ($50): Jon Hartman, “Nick Miller’s Guitar,” fabric and embroidery thread, The Arc Otsego Main View Gallery & Studio, Oneonta.

Spirit Award ($50): Wendy Stanton, “Unicorns and Butterflies,” acrylic on canvas, The Arc Otsego Main View Gallery & Studio, Oneonta.

People’s Choice Award ($50): Deidre Herr, “Serenity,” acrylic on canvas, Cherry Valley.

Thomas Sakoulas, chairman of the art department, and Jim Mullen, professor of art and dean of humanities emeritus at SUNY Oneonta, were the jurors.
