Hartwick College to host 22nd Summer Institute of Theology

It's no joke: a rabbi, a priest and a pastor will walk into, not a bar, but a classroom in Oneonta on Monday as part of the 22nd annual Hartwick Seminary Summer Institute of Theology.

The institute, which will open Sunday evening on the Hartwick College campus, brings together religious leaders and scholars from the region and beyond to discuss issues of faith.

Monday's class, titled "Nostra What?", will be led by Rabbi Donald Roberts of Temple Beth-El in Oneonta, and the Revs. Father John Medwid of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Amsterdam and William Hodgetts of Trinity Lutheran and Todos los Hijos de Dios Lutheran congregations, also in Amsterdam.

The class will look at the relationship of Christians and Jews in light of the Second Vatican's statement "Nostra Aetae," according to a media release.

Other courses planned for the institute include a seminary on the presidency and how Christians can consider the upcoming election, at 6:30 p.m. Monday; two seminars on heresy, including one led by the Rev. Allison Michael of Zion-St. John's Lutheran Church of Seward and Sharon Springs; and a course on "The Bible and Human Vocation, taught by the Rev. Dr. Mark Bartusch of Valparaiso University.

Walk-ins are welcome, but registration can also be made by contacting the Rev. Paul Messner of the Otsego County Lutheran Parish at prpaultheoinst@hotmail.com or 431-4599. In-person registration can be made in Room 244 of Clark Hall on the Hartwick College campus.
