Donations to help build clinic at Sidney hospital

Nearly $80,000 has been raised to help establish a clinic at Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney, according to a media release from the hospital.

The clinic is being established in memory of Bruce Wilhelm, the hospital's first chief executive officer, who passed away in April after battling cancer for nearly two years. The cornerstone of the specialty services clinic will be medical oncology, which is the management and treatment of cancer with medicines, including chemotherapy.

The two-month fundraising campaign has netted more than 100 memorial gifts in honor of Wilhelm, including a $50,000 pledge from Mirabito Energy Products of Binghamton.

"As a business owner, I recognize how vitally important easy access to quality health care is for a community," CEO Joe Mirabito said in the release. "I hope other area businesses will join us in supporting this project, which is also a special way to memorialize a good man.

Many of us at Mirabito remember Bruce from our years growing up in Sidney. He was instrumental in establishing TRH, so it's fitting that he be remembered this way. Helping make this project a reality is meant to be a gift to the Sidney community and a tribute to Bruce."

In acknowledging the gift from Mirabito, Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network Executive Director Michael Stein said: "We are extremely grateful for the support of the Sidney outpatient specialty clinic. We are thrilled that Mirabito has chosen to join with so many others in honoring our friend and colleague Bruce Wilhelm, who was such a beloved figure at Bassett, at TRH, and throughout the Sidney and Cooperstown communities."

After serving as CEO of TRH, Wilhelm returned to Bassett's Cooperstown campus to serve as vice president of Human Resources for Bassett Medical Center. His career in human resources spanned 30 years. Gifts in Bruce's memory may be mailed to the Friends of Bassett, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

The outpatient specialty clinic at TRH will be located on the hospital's second floor. In addition to cancer care, Bassett plans to offer orthopedic care and plastic surgery. Additional specialty services may be added later. Renovations to accommodate the clinic are expected to begin later this summer and should be completed in the fall.

Tri-Town Regional Hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week as an emergency-care facility serving the Tri-Town region, which includes the communities of Sidney, Unadilla and Bainbridge. The physician-staffed emergency department averages around 9,500 visits annually. In addition to emergency services, laboratory and radiology services are also available at TRH.
