A family tradition continued Friday with the crowning of the Delaware County Dairy Princess. The 50th annual coronation dinner was held at the Holiday Inn in Oneonta. Miquela Hanselman, 17, of South Kortright is the last of four sisters to wear the crown representing the county dairy promotion program of the American Dairy Association Dairy Council.
Her mother, Barbara Hanselman, is the chairwoman of the county dairy promotion committee that oversees the program. She was princess in 1978. The alternate is Cali Lutz, also 17, from South Kortright. They spoke before the event Friday evening. The two juniors attend South Kortright Central School, where they are both involved in sports are honor society students. They were also the only two eligible for the competition. Because of a previous commitment that prevented Lutz from meeting all the obligations, the status was determined before the event.
"It was great," Hanselman said about being able to wear the crown for a year take the lead in promoting the dairy industry through a variety of events, such as appearances at schools, banks, agriculture events, radio.
She said she enjoyed seeing all her sisters involved.
"I fell in love with it through them."
Through her involvement, she said that speaking at schools is her favorite activity. "I love the idea of reaching all the kids," she said. "They are the future for us." Currently she is involved with the family farm said she hopes to stay around it when she graduates from high school, but she said she hopes to have a career as a cardiac surgeon.
Lutz said she has been involved with the program for six years as an ambassador. Her father is involved in the transportation side of the industry. Although she could not run for the top spot, "I still wanted to be a part of it."
She is hoping to go into a career as a physical therapist. Barbara Hanselman said there were several activities to celebrate the milestone for the program. This included an effort by the Hait Moody families to present a picture history of the previous princesses their efforts.
She also worked on a booklet marking the occasion that collected responses from 30 people involved in previous programs, starting in 1963.
