On the Bright Side: American Heart Association honors area woman
A Roseboom woman is being honored this year at the American Heart Association's Oneonta Heart Run/Walk. Jodi Murray is the red-cap ambassador for the 3-mile event to be held March 31 in Neahwa Park, event director Kelly Karram said. She said the honor goes to someone who has survived heart disease or is dealing with it, and helps put a local face on cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer of all Americans according to the AHA website.

On the Bright Side: Hartwick College offers history course on downtowns
About 20 students studying the history of "Main Street, USA," will have a front-row view through visits and studies of downtown Oneonta. Associate history professor Vicki Howard is offering the course for the first time during Hartwick College's January term, an intensive four-week study period. The course will weave the past of economic development, urban renewal and other trends of the general topic with some visits to see the impact of historical and economic developments in the city, she said.

Helping others has become a family endeavor for the Pearlman family. Cooperstown Central School graduate Molly Pearlman has been home for the holidays while between projects. The 2011 graduate began a 10-month term of service in the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program, last month. She said her inspiration to participate in the program came from her father and brother.

A tractor-trailer-load of toys is one of the miracles that continues to make the annual Friends of Christmas Dinner a success, an organizer said Friday. The group was putting the finishing touches on its 24th annual dinner that will be held this year Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Chestnut Street in Oneonta. This will leave the sanctuary open for Christmas services, organizer Carol Forman said. The holiday meal, like many others provided in the area, is free and open to the public.
