Oneonta High’s attempt to extend its football winning streak into the 2012 season will begin on the road.
The Class B Yellowjackets will open the 2012 season at Class C Sidney, according to a schedule athletic directors received Tuesday morning from Section Four Football Coordinator David Garbarino. Although specific game times and dates have not been announced, Week One runs Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
Oneonta closed last fall with three straight victories to finish 4-3 overall, marking the second winning season for head coach Adam Hoover. The Jackets went 2-1 in Division III to match Chenango Valley and Norwich but did not advance to the Section Four playoffs in Hoover’s sixth season. Windsor (0-9, 0-3) rounded out Division III last season.
The four teams will make up Division II this season as Section Four rolled its Class AA and A teams together to form Division I. Horseheads, Union-Endicott and Vestal _ who played as Division II Class A teams last fall _ join Class AA holdovers Binghamton, Corning, Elmira and Ithaca in Division I.
Maine-Endwell, which evened out Division II last fall, dropped from Class A to Class B this season. The Spartans will vie for the Division III title this season with Johnson City, Owego and Susquehanna Valley.
Unatego and Unadilla Valley moved from Class C to Class D this year, forcing a realignment in divisions IV-IX as well. Neither qualified for the 2011 postseason as members of Division V, which also featured Greene, Sidney and Chenango Forks.
Division winner Greene, runner-up Sidney and CF will play in Division IV this season with Newark Valley and Whitney Point. The other Class C division (V) is made up of Interscholastic Athletic Conference affiliates Dryden, Lansing, Thomas A. Edison, Trumansburg, Watkins Glen and defending Section Four Class C champion Waverly.
Divisions VI-IX will compete for Class D honors.
Unatego and UV join Bainbridge-Guilford and Oxford in Division VI.
Route 10 rivals Delhi and Walton _ the Class D sectional runner-up last season _ will compete with Deposit-Hancock, Harpursville and Seton Catholic Central for the Division VII crown. Walton will host Delhi on Sept. 29 this season (Week Five).
Groton, Moravia, Newfield and Union Springs will play in Division VIII, and Candor, Elmira Notre Dame, Odessa-Montour, Spencer-Van Etten and Tioga make up Division IX.
Tioga won the Section Four Class D crown last season with a 19-18 victory over Walton.
The three-round Section Four Class D playoffs will begin the weekend of Oct. 19-20. Playoffs will start for the other classes the following weekend, with the Section Four championships slated for Nov. 2-3.
