Art exhibit to open today at Andes museum

The paintings, block prints, collage and Persian calligraphy of poems by Roshan Houshmand will be exhibited in "Petrichor; Far and Recent" starting today at the Andes Society for History and Culture Hunting Tavern Museum, 288 Main St. in Andes. The museum will host an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The show runs through November.

According to Housmand's website -- www.roshanhoushmand.com -- the series is "inspired by the distinctly pleasant fragrances of rain fallin on dry ground. It is produced by oily, yellow-gold globules, rather like perfume, that come from certain plants or the air itself."

Houshmand is an Iranian-American painter raised in the Philippines and Iran. She attended Bennington College in Vermont and the Rosary Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.

Her work has been displayed in New York City; New Orleans; Santa Fe, N.M.; Barcelona, Spain; Copenhagen, Denmark; and many other cities.

In 2006, Houshmand received a grant to attend "21st Century American Women Artists" at the U.S. mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment by calling (845) 676-3895.
