The West Kortright Centre, at 49 West Kortright Church Road in East Meredith will present its annual Gala Dance Under the Stars with Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars at 8 p.m. today.
The musicians were all forced to leave their home in the West African country of Sierra Leone in the 1990s, setting up refugee camps in neighboring Guinea, a media release said. The group began performing together in the camps with old, used equipment donated by Canadian relief agency.
The concert is under a tent, rain or shine. A drumming workshop will be taught at 6 p.m. Monday by SUNY Oneonta music professor Julie Licata, followed by a picnic dinner brought in or a traditional West African dinner, which must be purchased for $18 in advance at 278-5454.
Workshop admission is $10 or $8 with a gala ticket. The dance is $22 for adults and $11 for those 19 years old and younger.
