Grammy winner to sing as part of Iroquois festival

Joanne Shenandoah, called “the most critically acclaimed Native American singer of her will time” by The Associated Press, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Farmers’ Museum, 5775 State Highway 80 in Cooperstown.

A Grammy winner who sings in her native Iroquois tongue, Shenandoah has received more than 40 music awards, including 13 Native American awards.

Tickets are $20 at the museum or online at fenimoreartmuseum.org/museumshop.

The singer’s performance coincides with the Iroquois Cultural Festival at the nearby Fenimore Art Museum, 5798 State Highway 80 in Cooperstown.

Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the event will include Iroquois artisans, dancers, interpreters and Native American scholars.

Storytellers Perry Ground, Kay Olan and Mike Tarbell will speak on the Iroquois oral tradition.

Admission also includes access to the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, the Seneca Log House and Mohawk Bark House.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and free for those 12 years old and under.
