The Glimmerglass Festival will kick off its 2012 season at 8 p.m. Saturday with a new production of Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida."
According to a media release, "Aida" will be presented in "an intimate setting meant to highlight the personal drama of the main characters and the political conflict at the heart of the work."
The show will be sung in Italian with projected English translations.
Singers will include Adina Aaron in the title role, bass-baritone Eric Owens as Amonasro, Noah Stewart as Radames and Daveda Karanas as Amneris.
"Aida" runs through Aug. 25 at the Alice Busch Opera Theater at 7300 State Route 80 in Cooperstown.
Other main stage productions this season are Meredith Willson's "The Music Man," which runs from July 14 to Aug. 24; Jean-Baptiste Lully's "Armide," which runs from July 21 to Aug. 23; and Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill's "Lost in the Stars," staged from July 22 to Aug. 25.

Glimmerglass will offer discounted tickets for Performances on Saturday and July 13 to Otsego County residents who have not been to the opera in the past four years. These prices may require proof of residency when purchasing tickets.

Smithy Center for the Arts is will kick off its season for The Smithy Pioneer Gallery on Monday, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The first show will honors the Smithy member artists. In addition to the artwork, Stoddard Hollow String Band will perform live in the courtyard and, there will be hor d'oeuvres, wine and beer courtesy of Brewery Ommegang.
