Smithy Center for the Arts, at 55 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown, will open new exhibits at 5 p.m. Monday. They fall under the over-arching title "Pushing Boundaries."
On the first floor, "2+3" will examine the interplay between artists Tom Nussbaum and John Knecht. Nussbaum works with paper-cutting and sculpture-making processes, as well as mixing words and images. Joining him will be Sayward Schoonmaker's four-minute video loop installation. Knecht will present digital animation art on LCD displays, along with work by Kelly Boyle and Garrett Wilkes.
In the solo second-floor showroom will be abstract artist Linda Suskind-Kosmer with a new series of watercolors and acrylics in painted frames. The center of the second floor will belong to "A Migration of Words" by Anna Lehr Mueser. The exhibit will feature several hundred handmade paper birds. And in the Member Artist Gallery will be the modern, abstract themes and styles, curated by Xavier Jimenez.
Finally, the third floor of the gallery will showcase of the work of Gary Bower. The artist has shown in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Akron Art Institute, the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Arts and elsewhere. He works include oil and acrylic paintings. He has been the staff critic in painting at the Whitney and a lecturer in painting at the State University of New York.
The opening Monday also will include music by Small Town Big Band, food and drinks.
