Pianist George Winston to perform at Foothills

Grammy Award-winning solo pianist George Winston will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center, 24 Market St. in Oneonta.

Since 1972, Winston has released 12 solo piano albums and has performed thousands of shows. His latest studio album was 2010's "Love Will Come -- The Music of Vince Guaraldi Vol. 2."

His shows include his renditions of solo piano work by musicians such as Frank Zappa, Randy Newman, Sam Cooke, The Doors and Curtis Mayfield. He also plays some of the late Guaraldi's "Peanuts" soundtrack pieces.

Winston is working on primarily New Orleans, melodic folk piano and stride piano. According to a media release, he is putting the final touches on "Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2: A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit," scheduled for release this year.

The album will benefit the work of groups such as The Voice of the Wetlands organization, which was established by musicians Tab Benoit in 2004 as a volunteer nonprofit group dedicated to raising awareness and developing educational outlets about the loss of wetlands in southern Louisiana.

His live shows also include performances on harmonica and Hawaiian slack key guitar.

Slack key guitar is a Hawaiian fingerstyle, which began in the early 1800s and predated the steel guitar by more than 50 years.

He also did the solo piano soundtrack for the children's story "The Velveteen Rabbit."

In addition to his musical pursuits, Winston has been raising money for food banks and service organizations since 1986.

He works with local food banks on his tours to hold canned food drives at shows and donates all of his merchandise sales to local organizations.

At the Foothills show, he will work with the Salvation Army of Oneonta.

Tickets are $29.50 and $39.50. For more information, go to www.foothillspact.org. For more on Winston, visit www.georgewinston.com.
