Appalachian-influenced singer Nora Jane Struthers to perform

Nora Jane Struthers calls her music "Classic Americana." She will bring her fusion of traditional music to the Otesaga Resort Hotel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The hotel is at 60 Lake St. in Cooperstown.

The vocalist, a full-time high school English teacher before becoming a singer-songwriter, grew up singing with her father, a bluegrass band veteran.

She started writing her own songs in high school and began her performing career as a New York University student, playing in a folk-rock style at venues such as CBGBs and the Cutting Room.

The singer and her father, under the name Dirt Road Sweethearts, recorded an album, "I Heard the Bluebirds Sing," in 2008. The record included a handful of originals and versions of songs originated by Patsy Montana and Americana singer-songwriter Gillian Welch.

She released her first solo self-titled album in 2010. The tracks run the gamut from "Willie," a reconsideration of a murder ballad sung from the victim's point of view, to "Cowgirl Yodel #3," a melding of Jimmie Rodgers and Western swing.

Struthers said of her music: "It's not really bluegrass. It's not really old time. It's not folk -- it's all of these things."

A review of Struthers' solo album said: "Remember the name Nora Jane Struthers, because you'll probably be hearing it in the near future in conjunction with bluegrass awards. ... Her self-titled debut CD is, simply put, a marvel that combines brilliant songcraft, a sultry-yet-honey-hued voice and an inspired sense of personal musical style."

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $5 for those 13 years old and older, and free for students 12 and under accompanied by an adult.
