McCarthy: I won't challenge Gillibrand

GARDEN CITY (AP) — Long Island Rep.Carolyn McCarthy says she has decided not to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in next year’s Senate race.

A spokesman says McCarthy, who’s 65, decided for personal reasons not to run. Earlier this year, McCarthy criticized Gov. David Paterson’s appointment of Gillibrand to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton when she was named secretary of state. McCarthy was elected to the House in 1996 after her husband was killed in shooting rampage on a Long Island Rail Road train. She disapproves of Gillibrand’s stands on gun control.

Manhattan congresswoman Carolyn Maloney is still reported to be considering a challenge to Gillibrand. A spokesman had no comment Friday on her intentions.

Gillibrand must run in 2010 to fill the last two years of Clinton's Senate term. Gillibrand, the youngest senator at 42, represented parts of Otsego and Delaware counties during her years in the House of Representatives.
